August 4, 2015. Bayhorse campground - Stanley ID

August 4, 2015. Bayhorse campground - Stanley, Idaho

Another overcast start with cool temps. As we left the camp we realized it was going to be another headwind Hap sort of day. The riding is beautiful. Low traffic road following the Salmon River. No escape from the wind though. Sometimes when we came around a corner it seemed like we were in a wind vortex with the wind swirling around and stopping us in our tracks.

There was some road construction with a pilot car. We are riding on a narrow 2 lane winding road with not much shoulder. But like  I said not much traffic. At the construction zone they told us to get at the end of the line of cars and another pilot car followed to make sure we got through safely. That was reassuring.

We stopped at Colbert for a cold drink. There was a post office attached to the bar. When we pulled up the lady at the post office yelled you guys put me to shame. We said why is that? She said cause I'm just sitting in here. We said yes but your getting paid for what you are doin. She said good point! Then the bar owner opened the door and said you guys want some water or something ? I'm not open but come on in. We got a couple of pepsi and she wouldn't take any money for them. Idaho has some really nice people!

When we got to Sunbeam and had cell service we called a campground in Stanley to see if they allowed tents and had showers. Not only did they have that but they also had free wifi, free laundromat, free coffee and a restaurant! Yep that's where we are heading.

Whew the wind picked up more. How can that be?? We finally got into Stanley and stopped at the store. We needed 3 things, I needed some sports tape to wrap my knee, repair stuff for our tent zipper and beer. We figured they would have one out of the three things. To our surprise they had all three! That's a miracle in our books.

The campground was five miles outside Stanley. When we got there we just sat down opened a beer and pretzels and watched the scenery for awhile. We got to watch one of our fav campground forms of entertainment. A man trying to back in his RV or trailer while his wife directs him. A guy walking by saw us laughing and he stopped to talk. When he left another couple who had a toyhauler/trailer came over to talk.

We finally got the tent up and started dinner and a couple of women (mother/daughter) pulled in and camped next to us. They ended up sitting down for quite awhile while we ate then they ate. It's so much fun meeting people and hearing about differ lifestyles, different jobs. They were both flight attendants. Fun!

We are staying at this campsite an extra day. Once we leave here it will take 4-5 days of riding in the backcountry to get to McCall ID. Besides their cafe has prime rib on Wednesday!

August 3, 2015. Royal Gorge Campground - Bayhorse BLM campground

August 3, 2015. Royal Gorge campground - Bayhorse BLM Campground

We have always said the best part of traveling by bicycle is the people we meet. It seems that God puts specific people in our path as we travel through. I tried to explain this to someone one time and they said give me an example. So here it is! As we were riding out of the Royal Gorge campground we stopped to talk with the owner. She said something about the roads being dangerous. I made the comment about being hit by a car. She said really what happened? And other questions. Then she said her brother was hot on July 2 by a car. He was in a rehab facility now trying to recover. He is a special needs person who used his bike for transportation and had gone to the store for chicken and milk. Just like me the guy claimed it wasn't his fault etc etc....  She said how long did it take you to recover. We talked about that for quite a while. Then she thanked me for sharing and said she would tell her brother who is having trouble understanding what happened. As we left she commented strange how God put you guys here today to help my brother! Wow. Thank you Lord!

It was cooler as we rode into Challis along the Salmon River. Not much traffic on the roads but there is always that one car that could've moved over just a touch more. We had a few sprinkles but nothing serious. The challenge for the day was the wind! Sure took the wind out of our sails. Tough day but we made it to the campground. Nice and clean. We didn't even get set up before Hap strolled over to the neighbors, sat down and started talking. I couldn't find him but when I turned and saw him sitting there I just laughed. That's Hap!

We took a quick sponge bath in the river before starting to cook. Just as we were lighting the stove it started to blow really hard. The campground host said here it comes! It shouldn't last long. We battened down the hatches, jumped in the tent to wait it out. Sure enough it blew really hard for about 10 minutes then it stopped. We cooked dinner and went to bed. Seemed like a long tough day. We were both tired of wind.

August 2, 2015. Salmon ID - royal Gorge campground

August 2, 2015.  Salmon, ID - Royal Gorge Campground

Another hot sunny day. We left the campground about 9:30 so that we could eat breakfast before catching the 11:00 service at the  Methodist church. The Century 2 campground was really nice. Our site was on the Salmon River. We watched lots of rafts and "tubers" headed down stream. Looked like fun. We had everything we needed a grassy site, a great view, bathroom , laundry , electrical outlets, a table and FOOD! Nice place.

The church was on top of the hill. Where else?! What a nice service. The pastor gave a great sermon "What it was it was football". There was another couple there from Circleville OH (I-O) Small world. Spending time with like minded Jesus loving people is a welcome relief from the stress of riding and traveling everyday. Love it!

When we left church around noon it started to get hot. I know what your thinking. But it's a dry heat! I watched my temperature gauge creep up 100-101-103-105-106. What ?? Now it's officially hot! 107.5-108.3-109-110. Hap it's really hot isn't it? Kind of warm.... Our highest temp to ride in was 114 in Bozeman MT on our U.S. perimeter ride.  I thought that record would never be broken! 111-112-113.9. Uh oh. We stopped in the little bit of shade we could find. Drank and ate. Finally it was just too hot so we stopped and stood in the Salmon River for awhile. Ahhhh.  I drank 3 liters of water and Hap 2 liters. It's was HOT!

We followed the Salmon River all day. We are riding paved roads (route US 93) all the way to Stanley ID. And then start the Idaho Hot Springs mountain bike route in Stanley. We stopped at Royal Gorge campground and camped on the Salmon River. After a shower, some food and drink we were as good as new. For dinner we tried a new dish. Pad Thai instant noodles with another freeze dried meal of chicken and rice. It was excellent !!

It's supposed to cool down tomorrow. Let's hope so. Hopefully we can keep it below 100!!!

August 1, 2015 salmon Idaho rest day

August 1, 2015. Salmon Idaho rest day

For a rest day, we sure didn't rest much. I did laundry while Hap tried to find another noise in his bike. The campground owner even loaned him a bike repair stand. Good thing we didn't need any parts since the bike shop was closed. We went in town to a barbershop. Hap got a beard trim and I got a hair trim. Then we went to a pizza place for lunch.

After lunch we went to the grocery. We needed to buy enough groceries to last at least 4 days until we get to Stanley ID. Stanley is the starting point of the Hot Springs route. We plan to do the route counter clockwise. Heading toward McCall ID first. Idaho is a beautiful state. We did almost the same loop in Idaho last year except on our road bikes ad pavement. This route is almost all dirt/gravel roads with some single track. It should be beautiful. I'm not sure how much computer access we will have. So if you don't see anything for while don't worry. We"lol be back!

July 27 -28, 2015.  Butte - Wise River MT

It was really nice to be inside when it's pouring down rain and maybe 50 degrees. The Lord always puts us in the right place if we just listen! It was cold and wet just walking around in all our rain gear. We stopped at a grocery and got dinner. Tonight we are having chicken pasta Alfredo (microwave) and asparagus steamers. It seems like we are getting enough veges but we're tryin.

The next morning when we left it was still pretty cold. 60 degrees. No rain but overcast. We ate breakfast in the room, put on our cold weather gear and headed out. What is our cold weather gear? Pretty much the same as other days except we wear everything! Didnt need the rain gear thank goodness. We stopped at a bike shop on the way out of town. Hap bought an extra cable for my bike. Since my bike is new and he hadn't changed that cable before he asked the owner about how to change it. The guy wasn't very nice and said well you'll probably have to just have someone do it for you. Guess he hasn't seen Hap repair our tandem wheel using a chain link fence!

Getting out of Butte was easy. All we had to do was look for the uphill. Another day that I only needed two gears UP and DOWN. Started on pavement and then changed to gravel/sand. The roads are much sandier in this part of MT. We saw an interesting scene at a picnic area we stopped at just outside of Butte. An old car pulled up, and a cowboy (yes a real one boots, hat and all, minus the horse....) gets out of passenger side. A women gets out of driver side, opens the trunk takes out a pile of clothes and assorted personal stuff (even his basketball and spare boots) and lays them on the ground in a pile. We are covertly watching from the bathroom. Lots of discussion going on but we couldn't hear (darn it). She got back in the car before she could pull away he opens her door and talked some more. Lots of arm gesturing and talkin. He closed the door. She spun the tires backing up and pulls away. Then she stops starts to back up but changes her mind (I'm assuming) because she spun the tires and left. Leaving cowboy man standing there. Hap says guess they had a fight. I said well they are definitely not married. He asked why and I said if they were she wouldn't have driven him anywhere. She would just put his stuff on the porch and say get out!!!

Back to the riding! The sandy roads and rain yesterday made the roads really soft. Which translates into the tires sinking in and more difficult riding. Only adds to the fun. As we climbed the temps dropped down to 55 degrees. We stopped a bunch to change clothes. Tights on off, vests on off, jackets on off, gloves..... You get the idea! We saw snow in the mountains. Glad we didn't ride in that yesterday. Passed lots of free range cattle along the way. Finally reached the top and topped out at 7425 feet. We had a huge downhill to get back down to I 15. Very steep and slidey (translation: sandy and rocky, and rutty). Does this sound like fun to anyone else? I said Hap why didn't we just follow I 15 down from Butte? Would've been much simpler. But then we wouldn't have seen the cows or the cowboy would we??

We crossed under I-15 and got on the road. Yes a real road. In Divide we stopped for a powerbar and bathroom break. Only one problem no bathroom. Only thing there was a post office that was closed. Hope they don't have outside cameras at the PO!

The road to Wise River was beautiful along the Big Hole River. This area is huge for fly fishing. We saw loads of people fishing just didn't see much catching! In Wise River we camped behind the bar, took a shower for $10 bucks and had a great dinner.

July 30, 2015 and July 31 . Elk horn Hot Springs - Grant MT

July 30 and 31, 2015. Elkhorn Hot Springs - Salmon Idaho

Another blue sky day! We were anticipating a nice long downhill run to Bannack. But first....! A few short climbs to get over the top. We finally started a long gradual descent into a beautiful valley. We went from forested areas to open valleys and farmland.

We stopped at Bannack Ghost town for quite awhile. It's an interesting place with lots of history. The town was formed in the late 1800's because gold was discovered near there.  At one time 3000 people lived there. They have done a fantastic job at preserving the buildings. Does it mean we are getting old when we see something and say. I remember when my grandma had one of those!!

After Bannack, We got back on the dirt road to Grant. From our last trip through here I called this road "the road from hell". Because it was very washboardy and rough last time it killed my back. I wasn't a happy camper that day! Hap wanted to know which one I was "Dopey, Sleepy etc?" He's hilarious isn't he๐Ÿ˜   This go round the the road was fine. Or maybe it was my new bike , Lil Rumor!  Not sure and don't care my back did great.

We stopped in Grant and spent the night at Michael and Barbara's house. We pitched our tent in the softest green grass and had a great nights sleep. The next am she fixed us sausage gravy and bisquits that was yummy ! Thanks!

Since Grant is our jumping off point for the Great Divide Route, the next task for us is to turn west towards Idaho. We found a route over the mountains at Lemhi Pass, that looked good on paper.
Adventure Cycling's Lewis and Clark route went over this pass so how bad could it be?  The Lewis
and Clark is a road route and since We were on mt bikes (fat tires, full suspension bikes) we figured it

would've fine.

When we left Barbara and Michaels house the temps were already rising into the 80's. Another bluebird day! We started on pavement but when we turned onto Lemhi Pass road it changed to dirt/gravel/sand. It was well packed though so fairly easy riding. We didn't get too far before we ran into a Montana traffic jam. A couple of cowboys er Cowgirls er cowpersons??, not sure which is right, were herding a large herd of cattle down the road. We stayed behind them for awhile watching the dogs, horses and people work the cattle. Interesting. You just had to watch out for the exhaust! Finally we made our way through (on your left mama cow) and started the climb over Lemhi Pass. The grade was fairly easy at 4-8%. It took awhile but we made it. At one ranch a couple of border collies ran out. Maybe they didn't think we were going fast enough. So they were nipping at my pedals.

At the top we had lunch. PB and bagel loaded with banana chips. The down part of the pass was more interesting. Grades from 8-12%. No prob on our mt bikes but sure wouldn't want to ride a road bike with narrow tires and to a brakes on them. I think I'd be walkin!  It was about a 12 mile descent. We debated on camping along the river on the way to Salmon. But we were on pavement with a flat road and no wind. You do the math! Didn't take long to ride the 21 miles into Salmon. We stopped at the grocery for salad fixings and found a campground in town. A nice place on the Salmon River owned by a cyclist.

We decided to spend another day in Salmon since it was so nice. And we need to make plans for riding the Idaho Hot Springs route. I haven't really looked at the maps too much since I got them last spring. I guess it's time!
