May 7, 2017 Irvine CA

We spent two days in Imperial Beach with Jon and Joy, Hap's cousins. Imperial Beach is beautiful, although the weather was overcast and cool. It was fun to catch up with family. The last time we were at their house was in 2007 on our perimeter ride around the US. We left our tandem at their house that time and flew home for a few days.

The morning we left was still overcast and very windy. We headed north up the Silver Strand and took the ferry across the San Diego Bay. Wow! So pretty. All of the maps for this trip are Adventure Cycling maps and we have both paper and GPS maps. Should be easy to follow then, right? We spent a lot of time on trails along the bay. There was a significant (read BIG) wind from the side. Once we got along the coast there was a nice bike trail for the most part. Quite a bit of traffic, but they were probably used to bikes since we saw so many. At one point we were riding by the Scripts Labratory. The scenery was beautiful, but we had a very steep climb to the top! Whew. We made it and no one fell over!

I had tried to find us a campground but was unsuccessful. The RV parks didn't want the riff raff (tents) to stay there so we stopped at a motel for the night. Hopefully we'll have better weather tomorrow. I thought CA was supposed to be sunny?  We stopped at a grocery store and picked up dinner supplies. We both slept good that night!

We woke up to another cloudy, overcast day (sunny California??). Today we are riding to Hap's nephews house (Mark, Jenny, Katie and Abby) in Irvine. When we started there was a heavy mist falling on our heads. Oh well, that's bikin. We rode through Camp Pendleton Marine Base. There were many cyclists out enjoying our cloudy day. What a beautiful ride! There was a bike lane most of the way except for a 10 mile stretch around Laguna Beach. That's when the excitement started. All of the cars gave us plenty of room, except for the one (there's always one!). This is our second time riding through this area. We stopped at a little French cafe in Dana Point. Of course it was right on top of the point! Whew what a climb. Lunch was excellent. When we got to Newport Beach we got off of the Adventure Cycling route and used an app called Ride with GPS to get to Irvine. We were able to follow the route on my phone (how did we used to do this?). The whole route was on bike trails and the route we picked took us right to their doorstop. Modern technology! It was a great ride in spite of the cool, windy weather.
